7 DAYS 6 NIGHTS LAOS HIGHLIGHTS BY EXPRESS TRAIN
Highlights
Trace the soul of Laos from the Mekong-side calm of Vientiane to the karst horizons of Vang Vieng and the golden serenity of Luang Prabang. Glide between cities on the scenic LCR express train, cruise the Mekong to sacred caves, craft your own pottery with village artisans, and swim in Kuang Si’s turquoise tiers. This is Laos at its most authentic, gentle, and inspiring—balanced with thoughtful pacing and meaningful encounters.
Itinerary
Upon arrival at Wattay International Airport in Vientiane, you’ll be transferred to your hotel for check-in (early check-in subject to availability).
Situated on the tranquil banks of the Mekong River, this former French trading post offers a relaxed charm. Despite being the capital and largest city of Laos, Vientiane’s slow pace and laid-back atmosphere are part of its appeal.
After a short rest, drive about 45 minutes to visit the fascinating Buddha Park (Xieng Khuan), home to more than 200 Buddhist and Hindu sculptures that create a surreal and memorable scene.
As the day winds down, head to the Mekong Riverbank to enjoy the sunset. Take a leisurely stroll, sip a cool drink, or try some local snacks from the riverside stalls. Overnight in Vientiane.
Tip: You may also visit the Sinouk Coffee Pavilion to explore Lao coffee culture, see the roasting process, and enjoy a cup of aromatic coffee or tea (entrance and drinks payable on site).
Start your morning with a visit to That Luang, the most sacred monument in Laos. Built in the 16th century by King Setthathirat, this magnificent golden stupa gleams beautifully under the morning sun.
Next, climb to the top of Patuxai Monument, Vientiane’s own “Arc de Triomphe,” for a panoramic view over the city. Continue along Lane Xang Avenue to visit Wat Sisaket, the only temple that survived the Siamese invasion of 1828, renowned for its thousands of Buddha images.
Just nearby, explore Wat Phra Keo, now a religious museum housing an exquisite collection of Lao and Khmer art pieces.
In the afternoon, transfer to the train station and board the express train to Vang Vieng. Upon arrival, you’ll be met and transferred to your hotel in town. Overnight in Vang Vieng.
Today, enjoy a full day of adventure surrounded by the stunning natural beauty of Vang Vieng.
Begin with a visit to Tham Jang Cave, a historic site that once served as a refuge for locals during the Chinese invasion over two centuries ago.
Continue to Tham Nangfa (Angel Cave), known for its impressive limestone formations and magnificent stalactites. The cave’s ethereal beauty makes it a perfect place for photos or quiet reflection. For a dash of excitement, you can opt for a zipline ride over the area - an exhilarating way to take in the breathtaking scenery (optional, $19 per person).
After exploring the caves, head to Blue Lagoon 3, a peaceful oasis surrounded by lush greenery. Enjoy swimming in the crystal-clear water, relaxing on the banks, or simply soaking up the serene atmosphere.
In the late afternoon, take a 30-minute cruise on the Nam Song River aboard a local long-tail boat (two people per boat). Glide upstream and admire the stunning mountain backdrop and tranquil riverside views. On the return to your hotel, you may stop by local villages or a market to experience everyday life in Vang Vieng.
Spend the rest of the day at leisure, and as evening falls, relax and enjoy a beautiful sunset over the Nam Song River from your hotel. Overnight in Vang Vieng.
Take the morning train to Luang Prabang, a scenic journey of about one hour. Upon arrival, you’ll be met and transferred to the city center.
Begin your exploration with a visit to the Royal Palace Museum, home to a fascinating collection of historical artifacts. Continue to Wat Mai, renowned for its exquisite golden bas-reliefs, and one of the most beautiful temples in Luang Prabang.
Next, visit Wat Sene and the nearby Wat Xiengthong, a masterpiece of Lao temple architecture featuring sweeping two-tiered roofs and intricate mosaics, including the famous Tree of Life glass mural on the rear wall.
If time allows, drive out to Ban Xangkhong, a Thai Lue village known for its traditional weaving and crafts, and then to Ban Xienglek, where locals make handmade Saa paper from mulberry bark.
Back in town, enjoy a leisurely walk through the charming streets of the old quarter to observe local life. In the late afternoon, climb Mount Phousi to visit its sacred golden stupa and take in a panoramic sunset view over the city and the Mekong River.
End the day browsing the vibrant Night Market, filled with handmade textiles and crafts by local and hilltribe artisans. Overnight in Luang Prabang.
In the morning, your guide and tuk-tuk driver will take you to the boat pier for a scenic cruise downstream the Mekong River to Ban Chan Pottery Village.
Upon arrival, enjoy a short walking tour to learn about the village’s long-standing pottery traditions. Visit the pottery center, observe a traditional kiln in use, and see the local brick-making process.
Then, tap into your creativity by making your own pottery piece, guided by local artisans using age-old Lao techniques. Your finished creation will be fired and delivered to your hotel within 3-7 days, depending on weather conditions.
Afterward, relax and enjoy a delicious lunch on the terrace, overlooking the peaceful Mekong River, before taking the boat back to Luang Prabang.
In the afternoon, embark on a leisurely cruise upstream on the Mekong, soaking in the serene countryside views on the way to the Pak Ou Caves, a 16th-century cave monastery filled with thousands of Buddha images set within limestone cliffs overlooking the river.
On the return trip, stop at Ban Muang Keo, a village famed for its traditional Lao rice whisky distillation, before cruising back to Luang Prabang. Overnight in Luang Prabang.
Wake up at sunrise to take part in Laos’ most sacred tradition — the daily morning alms giving ceremony, which dates back to the 14th century. Watch as more than 200 Buddhist monks walk silently through the streets to collect food offerings from local residents.
Next, visit the lively morning market near the former Royal Palace, where locals trade fresh produce, meat, and fish right on the ground — a fascinating glimpse of daily life in Luang Prabang.
After breakfast, head to the Buffalo Dairy Farm, an enjoyable and educational stop for both adults and children, where you can learn about sustainable farming and even feed the buffalo.
Continue to the stunning Kuang Si Waterfalls, the largest in the area, cascading through three tiers into turquoise pools perfect for swimming and relaxation. You can also visit the nearby Bear Rescue Center, home to rescued Asiatic black bears, and the Butterfly Park, where you can unwind with afternoon tea and homemade cookies surrounded by colorful butterflies.
On the way back to town, stop at the Ock Pop Tok Living Craft Center, a serene riverside workshop where local artisans weave, spin, and create beautiful textiles using traditional Lao techniques. Free guided tours are available every half hour. Overnight in Luang Prabang.
Enjoy some free time to stroll around Luang Prabang at your own pace, soaking in the town’s peaceful atmosphere and charming streets before transferring to the airport for your departure flight.
