The Temple of Literature (Văn Miếu – Quốc Tử Giám) is one of Hanoi’s most iconic and meaningful historical sites, often referred to as the symbol of Vietnam’s thousand-year tradition of education and respect for knowledge. Built in 1070 during the Ly Dynasty, the temple was originally dedicated to Confucius, and later became the site of Quốc Tử Giám, Vietnam’s first national university. For centuries, it served as the place where the country's most talented scholars studied and took royal exams.
Today, the Temple of Literature remains a must-visit destination for both local and international travelers. The site features five courtyards, each with its own unique layout and purpose. As you enter, you are welcomed by peaceful gardens, ancient banyan trees, lotus ponds, and traditional Vietnamese architecture. One of the most recognizable structures is the Khue Van Pavilion, a beautiful symbol of Hanoi that appears on the city’s official logo. Visitors can also explore the ceremonial hall, where Confucius and his disciples are honored with offerings and incense.
Perhaps the most fascinating part of the temple is the area where 82 stone stelae, mounted on the backs of carved stone turtles, are displayed. These stelae are engraved with the names and hometowns of scholars who passed the royal exams between the 15th and 18th centuries. In 2010, this collection was recognized by UNESCO as part of the Memory of the World Programme.
In modern times, the Temple of Literature is not only a historical monument but also a spiritual space for students and families, especially during exam season or graduation. Many young Vietnamese wear traditional áo dài and visit the temple to take photos and pray for success in their studies.
